Last 2 weeks I have been on vacation. I was with the family on Rügen, an island in the north east of Germany. The first week we had great weather. We stayed at the beach or walked along the beach to the neigbor towns. Here is a picture of the landing bridge in Sellin.
Ofcouse we went to see the famous chalk coast in the national park Jasmund
We visited the hunting castle in Granitz. This castle was build from 1837-1851 by Wilhelm Mates I. Zu Putbus.
Special about this castle is the 38 meter hight tower. Inside, attached to the wall, is a metal spiral staircase. The stairs has 154 steps going all the way to the top. Its is possible to climb the stairs, they only allow 30 people climbing the stairs at the same time. Because the castle is build on a hill the top of the tower is 144 meter above sea level. Although the weather wasn’t good we still had a great view of the area.
We also visited Prora. During the time before the second world war people believed that the working people would work better if the would have a vacation every year. So Hitler ordered to build a vacation place to accomodate 20.000 people. From 1936-1939 they started building a 4.5 km long building. But it was never finished. When the war started the building companys had to work on other buildings more important for the war. They still worked on the building but now with forced labour. The complex was never finished. The parts that were finished have been used to accomodate soldiers and also as hospital. Even after the war had finished has it not been used as vacation place. Now the buildings are empty and waiting for an investor. It will most likely never be used as vacation appartments because the impact of so many people to the area would be catastrophical.
We had a great time with fun at the beach, hiking along the coast and even some culture.
